Illustrations in children’s books can not only help feed a child’s imagination, they improve a child’s reading, writing and education and can be just as important as the written text in the book. Pictures allow the child to make a connection with the words, story or events being told. The pictures help to tell the story, enhance the reading experience and enable the book to engage with the reader. They can bring a book to life and the child can visualise the story as well it evoking emotions, whether it is happiness, sadness or empathy they can all ultimately enhance their learning and reading experience.
As a children book illustrator I can work with the author to produce a book cover to a complete picture book. A book cover can be just as important as the title of the book, it is what attracts the reader, intrigues them and effectively sum up and reflect the content of the book. For picture books, illustrations and pop-up books, I can produce drawings of specific items, objects, draw and develop characters and depict scenes. The pictorial scenes can show action and events, and are commonly used in a child’s learning of history and famous past events. So whether the book is for very young children to learn the alphabet, for older children to learn historical events in a fun way or just for a child of any age to read, understand and simply enjoy a fictional book, I, as a professional childrens book illustrator, can illustrate these in the style the author wishes their book to be presented and to tell the story as the author intended.
